MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) at Gilthill
Bonjour! At Gilthill, we are committed to fostering a passion for languages among our pupils. Our primary focus is on French, which we teach as the main foreign language across the school. In Key Stage 1 and the Early Years, this learning is delivered by dedicated school staff who employ a fun and interactive approach. The emphasis during these formative years is primarily on oral language development, utilising engaging techniques including songs and stories to facilitate understanding and enjoyment of the language.
As children progress to Key Stage 2, they are taught French by a professional language teacher who visits our school specifically to provide expert instruction. This consistent exposure to a native speaker enhances the children’s listening and speaking skills, ensuring they develop a firm foundation in the language.
Recognising the importance of equipping our students for the future, we introduce Spanish in Upper Key Stage 2. This introduction occurs in preparation for their transition to secondary school, allowing them to broaden their linguistic skills and cultural awareness. At Gilthill, we believe that a strong language education lays the groundwork for lifelong communication and understanding.
