Design and Technology

At our school, the Design and Technology (D&T) curriculum is an integral component of our creative curriculum, designed to ignite students' imagination and foster their innovative spirit. Children are given the opportunity to work with a diverse range of materials and tools, empowering them to produce creative and innovative design ideas. Through hands-on experiences, they learn the essential skills of planning, constructing, and evaluating their designs.

Our D&T curriculum aligns closely with the National Curriculum for Design and Technology, which aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop the creative, technical, and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding, and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • Critique, evaluate, and test their ideas and products, as well as the work of others.
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.

The learning threads within our D&T curriculum are underpinned by our 'big ideas' and are progressively developed as children advance through the school. These threads encompass the mastery of practical skills across various domains, including food, materials, textiles, electrics and electronics, computing, construction, and mechanics. Students are taught not only to design, make, evaluate, and improve but also to draw inspiration from designs throughout history.

We believe in instilling our Ready, Respectful, and Safe learning values within our curriculum design. This holistic approach ensures that our students not only acquire technical skills but also develop a sense of responsibility, respect for others, and a commitment to safety—qualities that will serve them well in their future endeavours.
